Shrugged was already an incredible series. Full of innovative ideas and constant excitement. Then I read this issue and my interest increased tenfold.
For those of you who don’t know about Shrugged, the angel and the devil on all of our shoulders come from their own world and we all have them. No one has them as much as Theo though. He can hear the voices, and sometimes they even leave his mind. As if the battle in Theo’s conscious or the battle between Theo and the world wasn’t enough, someone is killing the residents of Nefario. It will take all of Nefario, Elysia, and Earth to solve this mystery and put an end to it. Hopefully Theo is up to the task.
From the first page I knew I was in for a treat. Much of what has come before in the comic is easily explained during Theo’s meeting with his therapist. I really hope he gets around to those files on Mastromauro, Marks, Sotelo and Reed. Sounds like a bunch of trouble makers. The kind that break boundaries. Things that we take for granted, like characters being confined to panels. Panels that are made of gutters and not file folders! This issue they shrugged off the rules!
Plus there is the aforementioned murder mystery. Volume 1 of Shrugged was loads of fun and a great story. Volume 2 started off well but this added level really pushed it over. I don’t think Theo is strong enough. I do think his friends will be his downfall. And most of all, I’m positive I don’t know the whole story yet. More twists will take place. Something bad will happen. Someone will rise and someone will disappoint me immensely. All of these emotions pouring out of me in only the second issue! Its not even the downer end of the second act yet.
Look at the “new this week” section at your local comic book store today. There are a lot of great titles coming out this week but in all honesty Shrugged is going to be hard to beat.
